It might as well have been made by a Tim Burton fan whose main storytelling experience was directing TV ads for candy. It even had weak character design, direction, lighting and comic timing-areas where, in the past, Burton at least seemed able to amuse himself. Sure, he directed it, and it made approximately 647 gazillion dollars worldwide, but it had no poetry, no grit, no soul. But that's not as big a change as you think, because Burton wasn't what you could really call "involved" with the original. The movie made me think a lot about myself, my life, and who I am as a girl.
I loved the dresses in the movie, and The Mad Hatters outfit was super fun too. Then there was “time” who had the coolest costume, and was my favorite character. My favorite part was when Alice was going back in time, and they made her journey of time travel look like an ocean with memories hidden in the waves. It is the best story of Alice that has been told, and will be a timeless film that families will enjoy watching for years to come. It comes back to family, and that no matter what happens ‘family is family.’ Johnny Depp gave another epic performance as The Mad Hatter, and Mia Wasikowska took her role as Alice to a whole new level. The story was captivated, and I felt immersed into Alice’s magical world. There are a couple of scenes that are slightly scary for younger children, and I would recommend it for children ages 5+. I felt that it opened up some great conversations with my children after seeing it, and I can’t wait to take my kids back to see it again this summer.
